This introduction to the coastal geomorphology of Sri Lanka originated in an idea sparked off by the late Professor K. Kularatnam two and a half decades ago. At the practical level it was made possible by field and laboratory studies conducted over the years; by the cooperation and assistance of many persons and organisations in Sri Lanka, particularly by the Division of Coast Conservation, Colombo, in its present form and its earlier guises, and mostly by the support given by the Department of Geography, University of New England, Armidale, N.S.W. The maps and diagrams were finalised by Mr. Neil kennan of that department. The script was put into the form it appears in print by Mrs. Leanne Frost, also of the University of New England. Photographs 3 and 24 were kindly supplied by the Coast Conservation Division. Several aspects of data and map preparation and proofreading were taken care of by my wife, Irene, who also assisted by her understanding, encouragement, and patience. To all these, I say ‘thank you’.
