The Maritime Archaeology Unit (MAU) of Sri Lanka is the only authorized institute that engaged in underwater archaeological fieldwork. Under this program (with the Archaeology.lk Group) we are giving the opportunity to the public to participate in the fieldwork under the supervision of qualified maritime archaeologists. It is also a public awareness program aiming for the protection of the underwater cultural heritage of the country. Under this program, participants will join with the archaeologists, who are working in the Bay

of Galle, with some interesting shipwrecks. It will include practical exercises, fieldwork, and associated lecture designed to understand the field activities in a short time.

  • Legislation and jurisdiction of government agencies regarding underwater heritage
  • The challenges of hands-on survey techniques
  • Recording of artifacts
  • The development of objects conservation for underwater heritage
  • The opportunity to chat and network with the other participants in the class, who were a very knowledgeable and competent bunch
  • Basics of underwater photography

You will be awarded a certificate of participation from the MAU and archeology.lk.

You must have a valid PADI or similar diving license to participate in this course.
