Archaeological Excavation- Nikawalamulla, Ruwanwella
lakshmi | Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 | No Comments »The Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR), University of Kelaniya, is currently engaged in an archaeological excavation of a place assumed to be a proto historic burial site. This site is the newest addition to the fifty odd archaeological sites representing the early Iron Age of Sri Lanka. According to the surface evidence of the site it is assumed to be a clay canoe burial. The archaeological findings from Ranchamadama in Hambantota District and Kalaotuwawa in Gampaha District have revealed similar types of burials.
This excavation is commenced under the guidance of Prof. Nimal De Silva, the director of PGIAR and the supervision of Prof. Gamini Adhikari. The resource personnel of this excavation are a panel of Professionals of the PGIAR including Dr. Arjuna Thanthila, Dr. Piyawathi Vidanapathirana, Senior Lecturer Ranjith Bandara Disanayaka and Dr. Vasantha Valianga. This is also supervised by the Director (excavations) of the Department of Archaeology, Dr. Nimal Perera with the assistance of Mr. Kamal, an archaeological research assistant. The MSc. students of the 2009/2010 batch of PGIAR along with other volunteers participate in this excavation.
The site is situated in the Nikawalamulla village of the Kurupetta G.S. division in the Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat, Kegalle District, Sabaragamuwa Province. The site is in danger due to a road development project carried out by the Divisional Secretariat. Hence this is a rescue excavation to be carried out before the accomplishment of the so called project. The main intention of this excavation is to gain knowledge about the site before the road is constructed. Through this excavation, archaeologists expect to reveal many unknown facts about the proto historic period of Sri Lanka.
