You can save our Under Water Cultural Heritage

 

The Maritime Archaeology Unit and the archaeology.lk is organizing this course to provide basic understanding on saving our under water cultural heritage to the future generation. Our target participants are divers in Sri Lanka who are doing diving for hobby. We believe they are the people who can help to protect our under water cultural heritage.

 

What you will learn

  • Better understanding the process of underwater archaeology
  • Legislation and jurisdiction of government agencies regarding underwater heritage
  • The challenges of hands-on survey techniques
  • Recording of artifacts
  • The development of objects conservation for underwater heritage
  • The opportunity to chat and network with the other participants in the class, who were a very knowledgeable and competent bunch
  • Basics of underwater photography

 

 

You will be awarded a certificate of participation from the MAU and archeology.lk.

 

 

 

You must have a valid PADI or similar diving license to participate in this course.

Underwater Archaeology Short Course 2011

 

Day 1 – 5th December 2011

  • Inauguration and Registration
  • Introduction to the training program
  • Lecture No 01 (Introduction Maritime Archaeology) and Discussion
  • Check the diving gears and equipments for the next day
  • Visit the MAU facilities and the Black fort area
  • Day briefing and the end

 

Day 2 – 6th December 2011

  • Lecture 02 (Maritime archaeology in Sri Lanka and the Bay of Galle) / discussion
  • Morning meeting – organize the first dive/ dividing in to the teams/ rules and regulations/ Safety
  • Preparations for the first dive Dive No 01 – Orientation dive on the site
  • Dive No 01 – Orientation dive on the site Clean the equipments
  • Practical on surveying motored (off set/ Trilataration/ 2D/3D)
  • Library surch on 18-19th century iron ships Day briefing and the end

 

Day 3 – 7th December 2011

  • Lecture no 03 (research work on 18-19 century iron wrecks) and discussion
  • Lecture No 04 (Artifact conservation) and discussion
  • Dive No 02 – surveying the wreck and record
  • Dive No 02 – surveying the wreck and record/ Clean the equipments
  • Practical on artifact conservation
  • Library search and recording work
  • Day briefing

 

Day 4 – 8th December 2011

  • Lecture no 05 (Legislation and public awareness) and discussion
  • Dive No 03 – continuing the survey and clean the site
  • Dive No 03 – continuing the survey and clean the site/ Clean the equipments
  • Practical on artifact conservation
  • Lecture no 06 – Underwater explorations/ excavations/ conservation
  • Day briefing

 

Day 5 - 9th December 2011

  • Lecture no 07 (management/ protection/tourism)and discussion
  • Discussion – participants view and work they done
  • Preparing the reports
  • Visit to the Rumassala and watering point
  • Visit to the Rumassala and watering point
  • Day briefing and end of the program

 

Prerequisites

PADI or similar diving licenses
